Indian Sandstone. Sourced from India – laid in Essex

Indian Sandstone is widely becoming very popular for driveways and patios as well as inside properties.  It is generally laid outside however it can give a very rustic look and feel to conservatories, lounges and kitchens.

As the name suggests, the stone is from India, in which 90% of it is found in Rajasthan. India is one of the largest miners of commercial rock deposits, establishing a firm base for the stone industry. With an estimated resource of approximately 1,690 million cubic meters, which comprise of over 160 shades of Dimension stone granites (DSG).

Being a company that purchases and installs a large amount of this stone within Essex, Milbarn Construction only purchases from a few selected importers of the stone, as this is the best way to guarantee that it was quarried without child labour and environmental destruction.
Very little stone is bought straight from the ground, it is mainly bought through dealers who source it from across the country and ship it over in containers, with the slabs already cut to size and palleted up.

Below are a few pictures of sandstone quarries, some showing the pure scale of the amount of stone and the size from which slabs are cut from, the people that work at the quarries generally cut all the slabs by hand, using just a hammer and chisel. They earn the equivalent of 1.50 pounds per day, their family also live on the quarries, usually working with the stone too in order to pay off ‘debts’. These are the quarries that we try to avoid.

Indian Sandstone comes in a huge range of colours, some of these include:

Raj Green   Autumn Brown   Mint fossel   Rippon Buff   Grey   Kota Black   L P yellow  and  Modak.
